A young woman with dark, wavy hair sits on a modern, gray chair against a plain white wall. She is wearing a black button-up shirt and dark pants, looking directly at the camera with a neutral expression.

Sujata Bharti

(b. 2000 Delhi, India)

Sujata Bharti is an interdisciplinary artist based in Bath, England. Her practice illuminates the intricate intersections of identity, belonging, and invisible labour. Through her exploration of heritage and migration, she creates fragile, body-like structures that exist in a profound state of flux—challenging the boundaries between the permanent and the ephemeral.

Influenced by the domestic rituals of her upbringing in Northern India, Sujata’s work serves as a sensory bridge between cultures. She masterfully reclaims overlooked materials—paper, natural pigments, oils, and bio-waste—transforming them into evocative spaces of resistance and care. Through labor-intensive processes of staining, shredding, and layering, her art reveals a hidden strength in vulnerability, inviting viewers into a space of quiet reflection and shared visibility.

Sujata’s work has been exhibited across the UK and India, including solo showcases at Emerge (Sion Hill) and group exhibitions at Somerset Rural Life Museum, The Holburne Museum, and Sussex Contemporary. In recognition of her practice, she was awarded the Gane Trust Grant and the Emerging Maker Bursary from the Somerset Craft Guild in 2025. She is also a recipient of the prestigious Royal Commonwealth Bath and District Award.

She strives to build community through her creative workshops, such as Henna Drawing, where she uses traditional mark-making to bring people together. By sharing these ancestral rituals, she creates a safe and empowering space where stories can flow freely and collective histories are reclaimed through the act of making.

Sujata holds an MA in Fine Art (Distinction) from Bath Spa University, where she is currently an Artist in Residence (EMERGE). She previously studied at Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab, India.
